The Narragansett turkey is a heritage breed, and is listed as “threatened” on the Americal Livestock Breeds Conservancy watchlist. Unlike commercially bred turkeys which must be bred by artificial insemination, heritage breed turkeys reproduce naturally.
The Narragansett is thought to be the first turkey domesticated in the U.S. These handsome birds are gentle and hardy. They are excellent foragers, good layers and attentive mothers. They also make a fine table bird. Our birds do appear to be carrying some interesting recessive genes. One of our hens has brown and tan replacing the black and gray in her plumage. I've been told that makes her a Silver Auburn turkey. You can see her in the picture at the lower left. We've also hatched birds with Royal Palm coloration, but Narragansett size and structure. There are three in the photo at bottom right, and you can click on the photo for a larger version. These may be Silver Narragansetts. We should have hatching eggs available this spring, and can incubate eggs for poults on request.
